Sally Mayman

Sally Mayman found her life-long passion for photography early on in high school. She finished the Sydney Technical Collage four year photography course in 1988 with the highest awarded portfolio. Mayman was also working in a dynamic commercial studio in North Sydney, assisting Tim Hixson. She became an accomplished Black and White darkroom printer and has always printed her own work for exhibitions.

Mayman worked for two years in the UK and Europe as well as three months in Guyana South America as expedition photographer for Raleigh International. This Youth Organisation had a profound effect on her life, leading to years working in outdoor youth education and now also seven years teaching photography workshops with Moran Prizes.

Mayman travelled through Africa for eleven months where her desire to tell people’s stories, create awareness and make a difference began. "The Intimate Witness" raised funds for Austcare and lead to ten years working with Mission Australia. Her interest in indigenous cultures also stemmed from her experiences with the Pygmy people in Africa and the Amerindian people in South America. It was years later and after raising a family that Mayman was able to fulfill a life-long ambition to work with Australian Indigenous communities. With painter Dale Kentwell their body of work, “Saltwater Country” was adopted by the Wilderness Society in 2011 and helped bring about the closure of the proposed gas hub at James Price Point in the Kimberley. In 2015 this body of work was bought by the State Library of Western Australia.

Mayman currently works as a freelance photographer in Sydney and also enjoys sharing her passion for photography with students in her Moran photographic workshops. She is currently working on a project with Youth Off The Streets, has portrait work showing at Annandale Galleries and is completing a Masters of Fine Art at COFA.
